Meet Matt Hubbard
He has lived, worked, and worshipped in Sylacauga for the last twenty-eight years and lives by the priorities of Faith, Family, and Fellowship. Married to his wife, Natalie, of twenty-four years, they have raised their two sons, Brady and Hayden, in Sylacauga and are members of the First Baptist Church in Sylacauga. Natalie worked twenty-four years as an educator in Sylacauga and currently serves as the English Language Arts liaison for the Alabama State Department of Education. Brady is a 2024 graduate of Sylacauga High School and is a freshman at the University of Alabama. Hayden is a sophomore student-athlete at Sylacauga High School. Like their dad, both boys love the outdoors, sports, hunting, fishing, and their momma.
Retired from a thirty-two-year career in Alabama public education, Matt continues to lead by mentoring first-year principals across the state through the new Alabama State Department of Education's principal mentoring program. Over his career, he has served as a classroom science teacher, athletics coach, Sylacauga High School assistant principal and principal, and Executive Director of Supporting Programs (Operations).
His time management and multi-tasking skills were sharpened over his professional career while earning post-graduate degrees, volunteering at church and multiple local boards /committees. In addition to his degrees, he added certifications from the University of Alabama's Superintendents' Academy, the Alabama Association of School Business Officials as a Certified Local School Financial Manager, and the Alabama School of Plant Managers Association as a Certified Public School Facility Manager and Assessor. He is also a proud 2008 graduate of Leadership Sylacauga.
Matt led numerous employees, departments, and over forty million dollars of Capital Improvements while developing and implementing short and long-term plans for Sylacauga City Schools. He is respected for his relational leadership style and working closely with his employees and department heads to achieve organizational goals. These leadership traits have been observed in his community service/volunteer roles as well in his church and community alike.
In his volunteer/community service roles, he currently serves as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Sylacauga, president of the Sylacauga Parks and Recreation board, and commissioner on the Sylacauga Housing Authority board. He has also served on leadership teams at the First United Methodist Church of Sylacauga, SAFE's Sylacauga Promise committee, Sylacauga Young Professionals board, South Talladega's Relay for Life committee, and South Talladega's Association for Retarded Citizens Sunshine Saturday volunteer.
Matt loves Sylacauga and its people! He has a lifetime of prioritizing opportunities for youth and will continue to do so as mayor. His organizational and personnel skills are what Sylacauga needs to lead our community forward together. Known for creating Sylacauga City School's motto, "We Are Family," while principal at Sylacauga High School, he has the proven leadership abilities to unify our community and work well with other local, state, and national leaders.
Matt believes Sylacauga’s location serves us well in attracting new families and offering a healthy lifestyle. He is committed to sustaining our small-town feel while continuing to improve Sylacauga's quality of life. He will actively seek and recruit new businesses and industries to Sylacauga. He understands the symbiotic relationship between education, workforce development, and business and industry in improving Sylacauga's economic future. He is committed to working with the new EARTH workforce development project and its leaders to maximize desired outcomes for Sylacauga!
His vision for Sylacauga is simple: restore confidence in city hall and local government, provide taxpayers with excellent services, and continue to improve the quality of life for all of Sylacauga.
